THE TONNAGE QUESTION,
PRIME MINISTER OPTIMISTIC,
A deputation representing' the Plaxmillers’ Association Messrs \V. Ross (Paxton), All'. Seifert (Paimerslon North), and A. E. Mabin ( Wellington)—waited upon (lie Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. W. P. Massey), on Saturday with regard lo Ihe (juestion of shipping tonnage for the coining' season. The deputation ipioted figures with regard lo past production and shipments, and the probable output during the next season, and expressed a fear dial there might he a. shortage of tonnage. Mr W. H. field, M.P., who introduced them to the Premier, pointed out that it would he a serious loss to the country, to the industry, and to the men employed if the tlaxmills were compelled to (dose down for several months through inability to export I heir produce. In reply, the Prime Minister slated that he had good grounds for saying (hat it was likely that there would he more ships to lake away produce than there had been during (he previous season. Put he would make a note of [he information that had been put before him, and do his best to ensure (hat there would he sufficient tonnage available.
