FOXTON PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

Thu Patriotic Shop was open as nsiiiil on Saturday last, under the charge of Mesdanios Korr-Hislop and Kellow, assisted hy Mrs Shirtclift’e. A sheep guessing competition was included, and ISO guesses were registered, and eleven competitors guessed I he correct weight, 481 Ihs., and the sheep was divided into quarters, which were drawn for, the successful ones being Messrs F. Spiers and T. Ward and Masters Morice Mitchell and Roy Allan. Gifts are gratefully acknowledged from: —Mesdames E. Healey, E. Robinson, Woodroofe, Lynes, Perreau, Harvey, Alex, floss, das. Stevenson, W. Ross, King, Greig, das. Robinson, A. S. Easton, Purcell, Proctor, Gower, Ball, John Ross, C. Symons, H. Thynne, Gibbs, De Bidder, Rough senr., Boyden, Messrs Hughes, T. Bowe, W. Ross, 0. Robinson, A. King, and a friend. The Society has decided to devote the (akings of the shop next Saturday to the Belgian Relief Fund, and a special effort will be made to raise a good .sum. The matter of Belgian relief is perhaps the most pressing of I lie whole war, and it is hoped that the public will rally round and make the day a memorable one. Misses J. Ross and N. Robinson will undertake the management. It has been arranged to devote one Saturday in September to the Naval Heroes Dependants’ Fund. The monthly meeting of the Society was held on Thursday evening last, Mr L. Freeman being in the. chair, and a fair number present. The secretary reported that the amount in hand to date was £1,140 Os Bd, and that the takings of the Patriotic Shop had been larger than ever since last meeting. The list of names omitted from the National Register of men of military age in the borough was handed in by Privates McGrath and Tindale, and contained 100 names. It was decided to bring same before the proper authorities.' The matter of the rejection of a number of likely recruits by (he medical authorities for trilling and sometimes fictitious ailments was brought up by a member, and it was pointed out. that some men enlisted with the determination of being rejected by informing the examining doctor of the so-called injurious results of illnesses they had had when small children. Tin* member suggested .that these men should be sent into camp provisionally and tested as to their Illness or otherwise. No action Avas taken, the opinion of the meeting being that the Defence authorities must be given a free hand. As a means uf making (he monthly meetings more interesting and educational the executive Avas instructed to arrange for a series of short addresses, lectureltes. or essays on Avar, subjects, same to he discussed by the members, and (lie general public to be invited to attend, It is hoped by this means to obtain a suitable subject for discussion every month, and thus extend the Society’s functions and create a wider interest in its affairs. Mr Cecil Tiinniclifte, a returned wounded soldier, ahs decided to return to his parents In Fmgland, his injuries preventing him folloAving his employment, and the Society has been successful in obtaining from the Government a free passage for him.

Tickets for the I'atriotic Concert in aid of the Naval Homes’ Dependents’ Fund, to ho hold on Tuesday, the 3rd September, will ho issued this week. Scats may he reserved at Mrs Tevioldale’s at a cost of sixpence extra. A very attractive programme has been prepared, and the rehearsals are now in full swing.
