A 1 last nighl’s Council meeting a, lei ter was read from the sexton, in which he complained of the had slate of the dividing fence between die cornel cry and the cornel cry reserve. Complaints hail been made to him, of sheep from the reserve trespassing in die cemetery. He notified the owner of (he sheep on die Bth inst, to remove the sheep and repair the fence, hut the shoe]) were' not removed or the fence repaired. The mailer was reported lo the down Clerk, and the shoe]) were only removed on the I4th inst. Several artificial wreaths were broken, (lowers eaten off and graves trampled on. I estimate the damage done at £!). Air Peter Robinson was also in adendance to lodge a complaint re the same matter.
Cr Coley, the lessee of (he reserve, said he gave authority to Air AVoodroofe lo put the sheep in the reserve during the Hood. Cr Freeman said ho was glad the matter had been brought forward.
On the motion of the Mayor and Cr Thompson, it was resolved that the owner of the sheep he called upon to make good the damage done hy his sheep in (he cemetery, Cr Thompson said Cr Coley was one of those who drew up the conditions of the cemetery reserve lease. Cr Coley said he did not intend to put the fence in repair, and the Council had not an “iota” of a chance for damages against the owner of the sheep. The Mayor said they were bound ip common fairness to protect the owners of plots in the cemetery, A motion was subsequently carried that the offer of Cr Coley to supply posts for the repair of the dividing fence he accepted, and that the borough roadmen do the labour required to put the fence in order.
