BOROUGH COUNCIL.

i ne mommy meeting or tne rough Council was held at 7.30 o'clock last night. The following reports were mui and adopted: Works, Finance, Library and Fire Inspector and Borough Treasurer. Tlie ranger reported that fill head of stock had been “arrested” during the month, driving fees 20s. Eighteen. head of stock had been impounded, fees Ills. The Nuisance Inspector reported that the borough was in a sanitary condition, and that two residents had constructed septic* tanks. The lamplighter wrote complaining that nearly all the street lamps except those in Slain Street, were in a, state of disrepair, and would not' he satisfactory until attended to by an expert. The gas manager had informed him that he had been too busy to inspect the lamps. On the mol ion of the Mayor, seconded hy Cr Stevenson, it was resolved to instruct the gas manager to put all street lamps in repair, and report on same. The Mayor said it was unfair to expect a newly appointed lamplighter to put the lamps in order. All the street lamps should have been pat in order before (In' now man undertook the work, and litis would he done before it new lamplighter was appointed. The mol ion was carried. Mr Spring tendered his resignation for the combined positions of lamplighter, nuisance inspector, etc. On the motion of Ihe Mayor, seconded hy Cr Stevenson, the resignation was accepted, and it was resolved that applications for the combined position he called by advertisement, to close on 2Sth August, and (hat a special meeting of lilt* Council he called for that dale (o consider same. Cr Coley suggested that a horseman he appointed as ranger, as the work of ranging could not he satisfactorily carried out otherwise. A lottov was received from (he local agent of the N.Z. Shipping Co., asking for the removal of ihe street lamp at present at the corner of Wharf: Street and Harbour Street, to (he opposite side of the la Her street. The writer pointed out that the aleralion would not. inlerfere with the lighting of Wharf Street, and would give the necessary light, to (he whole of Harbour Street, and would ensure much belter lighting of the dangerous culvert crossing the Awahon drain as well as the drain itself. The writer ottered to pay up to £1 to have the lamp removed.—lt was resolved on the motion of the Mayor and Cr Bryant, that (he otter as set out he accepted, and that the work he put in hand as soon as possible.

A letter was rend from the New Zealand Pictures Supply Co.. Ltd., ro tvimst'or of their lease of Coronal ion Town Hall to Air W. Smith. —lt was resolved that the Town Clerk yo throuyh the schedule of property in the Coronation Town Hall with Mr Smith, and ,-cc that all is in order before the lease is finally transferred.

Cr freeman snggesfed dial an expert he appointed to inspect the engine at the Town Hall. There had been a break down, and this caused inconvenience to picture patrons. The Mayor said he had investigated die cause of the trouble, and what was required was a shunt regulator. He had discussed the matter with Mr Smith, and he suggested thnt the Council should hold Hie umlter over until Mr Smilh approached the Council ou the subject.

An application was received from Mr W. Hamer to rent (he Town Hall at a weekly retilal of £().

The Mayor said this application had been forwarded on the night of the previous meeting, hut could not ho dealt with at that meeting. The Council had not called for applications for the leasing of the hall. The letter was received wilhont further comment.

A letter was received from Messrs Chapman, Skerrctt, Tripp and Blair asking for information on behalf of Mr Hamer re leasing of Town Hall. The following motion re same was carried unanimously: Thai Messrs Chapman, Skerrelt, Tripp and Blair ho informed that die Coronation Town Hall, Foxton, has been leased to Ihe Mew Zealand Picture Supplies C., Ltd., on yearly lenaney tinder section Hit) of the Municipal Corporal ions AH; that the agreement for same was drawn up by Messrs Bell, Gully and Myers a filer corisullalioti with the borough solicitor, and the uucxpired portion of such tenancy has been transferred to Mr W. C. Smith; Air \V. Hamer is not a ratepayer.” On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Bryant, it was resolved 1 hat the Council express its sympathy with Air Thos. Cook in his bereavement, and grant hint a week’s leave 1 of absence with pay.

Mr G. 11. Stiles, ex-Mayor, forwarded his enlarged photo to he hung on the walls of the Council

Ij was resolved to thank Mr Stiles and to hang the photo on the walls alongside the photos of past ex-tnayors. The question of reducing the curve sit the corner of Park Street at Victoria Park was referred to Ihe Public Works Committee with power to act. An application was received from the lessee of (he target reserve asking thsit the renewal of lease of reserve be put up to public auction. It was pointed out that the Racing Club contemplated applying to the Council for the purchase of portion of this reserve. The Mayor stsvted 1 thsit ho did not know whet her the Council had power to sell portion of the reseiwe. The present lessee used (lie property as si lihre drying' area, and was anxious to have (ho lease fixed in order to make provision for other grounds should he not be successful in re-leasing the reserve. It was decided to put up the lease as suggested. Cr Prevail I said more metal was required for the streets, and suggested that, some should he old .-lined from Handou or Pulls. Cr Coley said the 2uctal from (hat: qinufer would cost the Council about 14s per yard, as against Os from Tiaki(a luma. The Mayor said the Council could obtain prices of metal from Sandoii or Bulls. The floods had occasioned delay in forwarding metal. The Council rose at 8.30 pan.
