FIRES.
TWO OUTBREAKS THURSDAY NIGHT. On Thursday night and early Friday morning there were two outbreaks of fire in buildings owned by The Foxton Cordage and Flaxmilling C., Ltd. The first fire occurred in the scutching shed of the Star mill, the building and contents being totally destroyed. The fire was discovered at about 10.30 o’clock by Messrs . G. Alexander. Rockell and A. Henricksen, who were l on iheir way home. The mil break at this lime was confined to a leanto but soon spread to Ihe rest of the building. The I.lowing of the mill whistle and ringing of the tire-bell soon brought a large crowd to the scene, and a band of willing morkers prevented the lire from spreading to I lie stripping-shed, which was only about nine feet from the scutching shed. The latter building together with the contents, including an automatic scutcher, and about three tons of hare, was totally destroyed, hut the damage was covered hv insurance.
'[’be above lire had burned out by midnight, and about an hour later. Mr S. Austin, who was passing in his car, noticed a further outbreak in the rope and twine factoiw. M hen Messrs A. Ross and Rough arrived on the scene they found that a load of fibre on a motor lorry was alight. Mini a quantity of lihre lying in the factory was also on tire. After a couple of hours’ strenuous work, this fresh outbreak was overcome. The motor lorry was considerably damaged, a quantity of lihre de- - proved, mid portion of the woodwork of the building damaged. The amount of the damage done cannot yet he estimated, but is covered by insurance. Elsewhere in this issue the Company express their thanks to all who a-si-led in extinguishing the tires.
