lie conlirms that the rich get all they want, by paying for it. This costs them money, but they do not seem to mind the expense, especially those —and they are numerous —who have made fortunes out oi’ army supplies.
Less fortunate individuals, who constitute the great mass of the population, become daily more anxious for peace. They have become very downcast of late as the prospects of peace become more and more remote—that is, as far as the allies may be expected to ask for it.
Thu following incident is mentioned as showing how things have changed in Bet'liib An officer entered a cafe and passed by a group forming a circle round a soldier back from the front, who was relating his experiences. The soldier failed to rise and salute as the officer went by, and the latter called him to task very sharply for the omission. The crowd joined in against the officer, who, none the less, ordered the man
under arrest, ami told him to follow him. Calling a cab, the officer tried to make the soldier enter it; the crowd protested and although two policemen were standing by, they made no attempt to interfere, not even when the officer was so badly hustled by the crowd that he was thankful to escape at any price, while the soldier was escorted back in triumph to the cafe.
