The (|Jueeu of the (South with general from Wellington, arrived yesterday. (She will sail again for Wellington to-night with a. cargo of hemp. The Xapier Hospital Board, owing to the diphtheria epidemic, has asked the Hawke’s Bay Education Board to close all schools under its jurisdiction.

The third victim of the Kakahi tragedy, Neal Jeffrey, aged fouryears, died in the Taumarunni Hospital on Monday afternoon. Mrs Jeffrey is recovering, and the othervictims are improving.

In consequence of the nomination of Mr Fred. Pirani for the Wanganui borough on the Education Board, the Bev. Mr CJalder and Mr J.-C. Bichardsou have retired from the contest. The candidates now for the two seats are Mrs Comyns, Messrs W. Bruce, B. Sewell, W. A. Veitcii, M.P., and F. Pirani.

A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced in this district at 9.12 on Tuesday night. Nurse Elsie Crichton, a young woman aged 20, whose parents reside in liangiora, left a nursing Inane on Monday evening, and while crossing the Papanui road was struck hy a train. Her skull was fractured and she died shortly afterwards at the general hospital.

Huston, flaxmiller, of Coxton, for a £1(1 penalty for an alleged breach of the Claxmillers’ Award in that he contravened the award by charging Ills per M’eek board. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The defence claimed a non-suit and contended that no breach of the award had been committed as the defendant did not board the men. That was undertaken by a contractor. His Worship non-suited the plaintiff with £1 Is costs. Mr Stove appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr .1. P. lanes for the defendant.

Next W ednesday is going (o he a red-letter day at the local Slate school. The leaching stuff and scholars arc out lo raise a sum of money to assist the dependents of those brave tars who gave their lives in the naval battle off the Jutland coast. The children, for some rime {last, have been taking to their leaehei's at the school eggs, vegetables, etc., to he disposed of at Ihe sale on the above date. The collection will astonish parents and others whim they see them nicely arranged for sale. There will he other items lo attract a big gathering. A doubt has been expressed as to whether the spacious quadrangle and class rooms al the school will accommodate all comfortably. The school is out to do its very host, and (hat the public will not fail in responding lo their efforts goes without saying.
