THE GAS WORKS.

MANAGER’S REPORT. The gas manager reported as follows at last night’s Council meeting: ‘T have to report a. busy time and a heavy demand for gas during the month of Jane. Some seven new consumers have been connected up since last report. The sale of gas through our private consumers’ meters shows the handsome increase of 140,000 feet over the corresponding month of last year. Since then we have gained over 50 new We have taken in 182 lons of coal since your last meeting, and we have now a safe stock in the yard. The sale of coke for household purposes is very slow. The people do not seem to understand it is a saving of 50 per cent, in the cost of fuel as compared with wood or coal. We have many inquiries from householders who wish to buy coal, and I am of opinion that it would assist the sale of coke considerably. The Mayor said that if desired

the manager’s suggestion in reference to selling coal could be referred to the gas committee for consideration. As for as he was concerned, he had no feeling one way or the other, although he did not think* a Council shouh. enter into competition with private business men.

J CNF, WORKING. During the month of Juno the qmmtity of gas manufactured at ihe local works was 512,100 ft., which, with the amount in the holder on June Ist, 4,500 ft., made a total of 510,000 ft. The amount sold to consumers for lighting was 200,200 ft., for cooking and heating 159,200 ft., for power 78,700 ft., used in street lamps 25,500 ft., used at works 23,000 ft., and there was 3,000 ft. in the holder on July Ist, leaving 21,000 ft., representing 41 per eent. of the output, unaccounted for. Forty-tlu'ee and a-half tons of coal was carbonised, yielding ll,Sooft. per ton.
