SCHOOLMASTER’S SUICIDE.

Christchurch, -tunc 4-1. James P.dward Granville, aged -14, a school teacher, residing at Barba does street, Si. .Moans, who had been slfering for some time from neurasthenia, and who bad been under treatment at the Papanui Sanatorium, cut bis throat yesterday and died later in the hospital.

At. tin* inquest this afternoon, Gustav Arthur Brandstaler, a (.milled mule nurse, deposed that lie was in charge of the sanatorium inslilution, and took all classes of patients. Deceased applied on Monday for admittance as a patient, and Dr Orchard, his physician, concurred. Witness treated him with electric baths and massage. Ur Orchard came up and entered deceased’s name on the sanatorium register as suffering from neurasthenia. Deceased showed no signs of wishing to commit suicide, and had lie done so witness would not have admitted him. Witness thought he discovered traces of mental weakness in deceased, hut he was reassured by a conversation with deceased and the assurance of Dr Orchard, and put down the peculiarities as due to deceased's deafness. The sanatorium belonged to the Seventh Day Adventists. It was a vegetarian institution, and they used no stimulants.

“I shall report this to the inspector of Hospitals, and f warn yon that you are taking a, great risk in taking these neurasthenic patients. Are you licensed V’ asked Air 11. \V. Bishop, S.AI., Du; Coroner. ‘Acs,’’ said witness.

“You may get your license cuncelled. However, you are quite safe. \ou asked for the doctor’s adv ice, and acted on it, but still you are running a great risk. Doctors ina.\ send patients there simply to please their friends.” A verdict was returned of suicide while in a state of unsound mind.
