CHEERFULNESS.
Cheerfulness is more precious than great riches. If 1 Avere founding a new religion, its first commandment should be “Thou shall: he cheerful.” If I Avere instituting a new school of medicine, its fundamental principle would he : Cheerfulness on the part of the doctor, and for I lie patient good cheer. For in (lie sympuny of life much gold without cheerfulness is as sounding brass and clanging cymbal. Religion Avithoiil cheerfulness is a mockery. Success in the cure ot most maladies depends upon faith and hope and cheerfulness. The optimist is cheerfulness personified ; the pessimist a Avalking grouch. The eheerfiiloplimist makes the progress of humanity ; the gruAving pessimist would turn hack the wheels of time. Abas Avith pessimism ! Let eheerf illness x'eign supreme ! —Emory Lanphear, M.D.
