MONDAY MORNING TRAIN SERVICE.
AT iho last meeting () |' [ho local Dorottgh Council iho unsatisfactory running' of the Poxt on-Pa hncrston trains was discussed. The Council some lime ago asked the Minister tor Railways to speed up the train between the two places, as the time taken to cover the t wenty-four miles exceeded the hour and a-half allowed for the journey. Instead of speeding-up, the Department added a furl her ten minutes (or the run. 'the opinion was expressed that the authorities appeared to set their minds upon penalising Poxlon. Whether this is so or not we cannot say, hut (lie treatment appeal’s to he on a par with the department's opposition to the port. Apart from the question of (in* length of time it lakes to cover (his distance, local people have a genuine grievance which should la l attended to without delay. We refer to the running of the 7 o'clock train to Palmerston during the winter months. This early train was pul on to suit the convenience id' a number of Palmerston people who spent the weekend at the seaside, but why it was ever sanctioned for the whole year is beyond our comprehension, Grom November to February this train suits the convenience of a number of Palmerston people who visit the seaside, but the number has greatly diminished during the past few years, as motor cars now serve (Ik* purpose of locomotion. Local people and school children are thus compelled through the winter months, at great inconvenience, to catch this early (rain, when tin* usual !) oh'lock service would suit them just as well. The To’clock (rain is absolutely unnecessary, except for the three months abovx mentioned, and we urge the Council and the member for the district in the public interest —and in the interest of the Department itself — to cut it out.
