The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JUNE 20th., 1916. GENERAL BRUSHILOFF.

GENERAL BRUSSILOFF, Hie Bussiiin commander who tins won great successes in Valynia mnl Bukoviua, is the subject <>L' n character sketch recently wrillen by n correspondtin 1 of Ilu> Fetrograd Bourse Ouzel (e. lie says : “Brussiloff lives by nerves, strenuous work, and a sense of duty. He eats very little. lie regards dinner as a, necessary evil, and il is finished in nof more Ilian 20 minutes. Immediately it. is over he goes to the adjoining carriageworkroom with his head staff, and they are occupied together till late at night. The soldiers worship him. He never courts popularity among them, lie talks lo them seldom, and then with matter-of-fact, abruptness, bul in his few words lies a knowledge of the soldier’s soul —a skill in (hiding the direct, road to the soldier's heart, which could never be taught., but which must he deeply rooted in the man himself. The general’s physical 1 endurance is amazing at the age ol 04. .Even now one of the best, cavalrymen in Europe, he can out-distance expert and youthful horsemen. When he rides round the positions weather does not. exist for him. If the, automobile slicks in the rich, black, soil, lie continues his way on horseback. Where going is impossible for horses, as in the Pinsk swamps, he goes on foot, knee-deep i' l mud. lie jumps from dump to (dump in places where there is water right and left, and never shows a, sign of fatigue. The Austrians and Hermans arc believed to be greatly impressed by Brussiloff’s personality. To his front are sent the picked troops. The enemy’s best generals have broken their teeth and (daws against the iron ‘harrier’ of the famous Brussiloff corps. He is noted for his laconic orders. ‘Hold out, whatever happens I’ And they hold out, and no frenzied attacks, no tempestuous cannonade, will drive them back when such an order has been given. There is in currency the following soldier’s remarks : ‘What, retreat; Impossible! We are Brussilolf’s!’ The army is proud of Brussiloff, and Brussiloff is proud of his army. Giving it due credit for its endurance, valour, and stubbornness, ho desires only one thing, and that is more detestation of the Germans. ‘Hatred for the enemy,’ he says, ‘multiplies one’s forces tenfold. Hatred is one of the pledges of victory. In the Slav heart there is too little hatred of the enemy, and it must be trained and cultivated. If the scoundrels use explosive bullets, smash them back with the same weapon.’ ”
