THE NATIONAL REGISTER

COFNCIE TO CONFER WITH

PATRIOTIC SOCIETY

At last night’s Borough Council meeting, a letter was read from the Secretary of the local Patriotic Society, asking that the Council confer with the Society on Wednesday evening next, at 7.30 o’clock, to discuss the best means of assisting the authorities in perfecting the National Register. r fhe Mayor said the Council had previously refused to assist the (iovernment ’in this matter unless they brought in compulsion. This the (lovernment had now done, and the Council, in order to be consistent, should render assistance. He suggested that paid canvassers should be employed. The cost would not be great, as he understood that the Patriotic Society would pay half. He moved, and Cr Bryant seconded, that the Council meet the Patriotic Committee as suggested with a view to co-oper-ating in completing the National Register for the borough.

Cr Bryant said that his sons had tilled in their registration papers, and one had since enlisted, yet the police had informed his sons that (hey had not registered. He would like to know what had become of (he registration papers. The Mayor informed Cr Bryant that the names of his sons were on the official registration forwarded to him. Cr Freeman said it was the duly of the Council to assist in this matter. Cr Thomson concurred. Cr Henderson, in supporting the motion, said two paid canvassers could easily do all that was required in a couple of days. Crs Bryant and Coley said the work should be done by (ho police, as they were not overworked. The Mayor explained that the object was to find out who had not registered. He had heard that certain persons had destroyed their registration papers. The motion was carried unanimously.
