THE HEMP MARKET.
The London market keeps very high in ail descriptions of lihre, apparently on account of the dearth of supplies. It is reported that, stocks of Manila hemp are lower than they luivd been for years, and there does not seem the slightest chance of this being remedied, an extra, shipping space is unobtainable. Only recently as high as £2O per ton was paid for freight from Manila. Although the position of Manila, hemp dominates the market, in a general way, New Zealand ilax comes more directly ibto competition with Mexican libre, and on account of the. political troubles in Mexico very little would be sent away even if shipping were available, Stocks are accumulating, but only moderate shipments are beinggot away. German East, African ’sisal has been gradually growing in importance, as a competitor of phorminni tenax during recent years, but since the war these shipments have slopped, and at present; all kinds are short in London. English mail advices report that the principal demand at present is lor fair, chiefly high point, and that there are only a small number of buyers fur good fair.
