The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, May 23, 1916. GET OUT AND WALK!

KOI* months past 1 Ik* PalmerslonFoxlon trnin has been arriving at Foxton ;il anything from half-an hour to ;m hour behind schedule time. The time allowed Tor the 24 miles run between 'Palmerston and Foxton is one and a hall' hours. There are a number of small stations en route where shunting operations are carried out, and tin* camp siding' has also been responsible for a fair amount of time. Closer settlement has increased the work at the sidings, and it is now almost impossible for the train to deal with congested tratin' and keep up to the time-table, it has been suggested that an extra train be put on one or two days a week in order to allow the mails and passengers to get through in the time scheduled. Tin 1 Borough Council and others have protested to the Minister and member for the district with the object of ensuring a better service. In the House recently, Mr \V. 11. Field asked the Minister of Railways : “When does he propose to establish, and adhere to, regularity of running of the trains on (be FoxtonPalmerston North line, tin* utter failure of which to run according to time-table has been for months past creating vexatious inconvenience to the business people, and to the public generally, in and near the borough of Foxton ?” The Minister’s reply is as follows ; —“The time-table on the Foxton branch is being altered and more time will be given to the trains to do the journey, it having been found in actual practice that the additional stops made since the establishment of the Rangiotu camp renders it 'impossible for. the (rains to run to the present schedule. The new timetable will be brought into force at an early date.” It will be seen from the above that the Minister, instead of bringing about are improvement, proposes to make the journey still more protracted ! The only alternative is for the Foxton public to start a motor ’bus service between Foxton and Palmerston, and we believe not only would such a service be liberally patronised, but. it would be a good financial proposition.
