RETURNED SOLDIERS AND AFFORESTATION.
Mr Wk H. Field, member for the district, recently asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will formulate a scheme for utilising (he labour of some of our returned soldiers in afforesting the sand-drift areas and other waste lands of (he country, and thus provide these l deserving men with profitable employment, and at the same time pursue l a pedicy whiedi will help lo provide* the Dominion with timber to take the 1 place ol our own fastdisappearing native forests. In reply, the Right Mon. Mr Massey saiel afforesting the lands in question would entail a considerable addition lo the present expeneliture on Slate tree-planting, and, owing to financial exigencies, (he 1 proposal canned be givem effect (o jusi at present. Arrangements have 1 , however, been made 1 by whiedi disedmrged soldiers who are 1 able lo work in the existing State 1 nurseries and plantations may be 1 employed therein when opportunity offers.
