COUNTY RATES.

AN INCREASE MADE. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawalu County Council, the Chairman, speaking on the estimate.-, said he agreed with the suggestion made by Cr. Penny that the rale- should he increased to do necessary works. Now that the farmers were prospering, it would he a good time to increase the rates and put the roads in really good order. Then later on they might reduce the rates again. The Council had an overdraft of £1,0(10, which they should try to gel rid of. He thought they should increase the rates all round hy ,id. This would bring an additional £1,200. The Council had a lengthy discussion on the question of raising the rates. Some of the ridings were in debit on their riding accounts, and on this ir was proposed that these particular ridings should have their rates increased by id, which would help towards wiping out their overdrafts. In addition to these riding increases, the Chairman proposed an increase of id over the whole county general account. Crs Phillip- and Uray were strongly opposed to the extra, id.

The motion tor the general rate including tho extra .id over the "hole county, was proposed by the Chairman and Seconded by Cr Hammond. On being put. it was carried, Crs I'hiliips and Gray voted against
