HEAVY PURCHASES IX NEW
ZEALAND
Tiie Tmperial Government Supply Depart men! has to date paid out no less a sum than £9,480,444 for meat, cheese and seheelite purchased in New Zealand on behalf of the Imperial Government. The meat purchases comprise ; (i5(i,317 «liuirlers beef, 2,90.4,172 carcase's mutton,' 4,Kit),185 carcases lamb, the payments amounting to £8,018,893. Ninety-two steamers arc concerned in the carriage of this’ meat, seventy-live having arrived at. their destinations, twelve are now en route, four are at present loading, and one, the Clan Maetavish, was sunk hv the enemy.
The cheese shipments to date total 108,(540 crates, weighing 11,344 tons, purchased a cost of £737,828 ; of this <p 0,441 lons have been delivered to (he Imperial Government, and 4,909 lons are en route.
Ssheelite is worth approximately £IBO to £2OO per ton, and 140 lons have already been secured by the Imperial Government Supply Department, 88 of which have reached their destination, and ;>2 tons are on the water. The payments made liy way of advances to producers, total £25,723. Seheelite is purchased on a c.i.L basis,- (be final adjustment with producers being made on receipt of particulars of the analysis made in England, which form the basis of settlement.
