THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
GRADING RETURNS. The total number of bales of hemp graded by the Government experts last month was 16,622, as compared with 9373 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 7249 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st March, 1916, the number ot bales graded was 137,382, as compared with 82,987 for the previous twelve months —an increase of 54,895 bales. During the month 4598 bales of tow were dealt with as compared with 2192 for the corresponding month of last year —an increase of 2406 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st March, 1915, the number of bales graded was 38,898 as compared with 33,374 for the previous twelve months —an increase of 15,524 bales. The number of bales of stripper slips graded was 831 as compared with 276 for the* corresponding month of last year —an increase of 555 bales. For the twelve months ending March 31st, 1916, the number of bales graded was 5885 as compared with 1,482 for the previous twelve mouths —an increase of 4403 bales.
