LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Hkrai,d will not be published on Saturday next. Advertisers please note.*

At the termination of his lecture at Ashburton on Saturday evening, Mr Clement Wragge passed exhibits of radium round the audience. Two tubes were stolen, valued at The local business places will observe the following holidays at Easter : Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Tuesday (Anzac Day). The shops will be open as usual on Saturday. Owing to the unavoidable absence of two ministers of local denominations, the united religious services proposed to be held on Anzac Day bas been abandoned. We understand a religious service is to be held at All Saints’ Church. Mr R. Moore has received a postcard from our late esteemed townsman, Mr W. E. Barnard, who gave up a lucrative legal practice at Te Aroha to offer his services to the Home Defence authorities. Mr Barnard is at Aldershot in the R.A.M.C. Depot. Pte. Barnard writes : Have been in the army about two weeks. It is a bit severe at first but I think I can make a ’‘do of it.” He sends greetings to Foxton friends. For the position of town clerk locally, for which applications closed last night, there were fourty-four applicants. The special committee of the Council set up to reduce the number to five and furnish a report to the Council, met last night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr Alf. Fraser), and Crs Henderson, McColi and Stevenson. The final selection from the five will be made at a special meeting of the Council to be held on Thursday evening. Mr Lionel Walsh, who played the leading role in “Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford” last night, is an actor of a very high order, and capable of taking his place in any company. During the latter part ot the Australian tour of the J. C. Williamson “Within the Law” Company, which included Miss Muriel Starr, he played the part of Joe Carson. To-night at the Coronation Hall, he will play the leading role in “The Man Who Stayed at Home.”

“A recent visitor to Foxton from the Apiti district, writes to the Palmerston Standard in reference to the articles which have lately appeared in that journal in reference to the harbour improvements. He says this subject interests him very much, and he is firmly convinced that there would be a great future for the port of Foxton and Palmerston if some such scheme were carried out. He also remarks that a water and drainage scheme is urgently needed at Poxton —a remark which,” our contemporary adds, “should be vigorously applauded at Foxton, but unfortunately the people have not awakened yet to their responsibility.”—We have been unable to find any trace of a city named Apiti in the municipal handbook from whence our “recent visitor” hails.

The “Within the Law” Company opened their Foxton season in the Coronation Hall last night, when the four-act play, “Get-Rich-Quick- Wallingford,’’ was staged. There was a fairly large and a very appreciative audience. The play chronicles the adventures of J. Rufus Wallingford and Blackie Daw, two crooks, who, when practically “on the rocks,” arrive in the peaceful town ot Battlesburg and cause a whirl of excitement by promoting companies, their object being to fleece the unsuspecting inhabitants. They are just preparing to make a “get away” with the shareholders money when the schemes are crowned with phenomenal success, and they become the leading men of the now prosperous city. The piece was elaborately staged, and produced upon a scale much above the average of the usual provincial town productions. The chief work fell to Mr Lionel Walsh, (J. Rufus Wallingford), who was seen to such good effect in the roll of Joe Gafson In “ Within the Law” when the company previously visited Foxton, Miss Hilda Dorrrlugton (Fanny Jasper) and Mr Fred Coape (Blackie Daw) and these artists, more than upheld the high reputatio n they have made in the other productions they have played in. The rest of the players are well above the average, and the company will no doubt be greeted by a full house to-night.
