THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
The position in regard to the hemp industry is still very unsettled, but it is probable that most of the mills will close down temporarily at the end of the current month. It is usual , for the mills in this district to close for two months during the winter, so that the only difference in the position this year will be that they will be closed a month earlier than usual, and it is hoped will re-open a month earlier than in previous years. The market at present is very unsettled, and it is impossible to give trustworthy quotations owing to the difficulty attendant on exporting. The London market is very bright at present, but these prices cannot be taken advantage of owing to the shortage of shipping space. During the week sales have been made by millers at very much under present London values. It is probable that the Prime Minister will be in a position to make a statement on the position in regard to shipping within the next few days.
