COMPARATIVE FOOD PRICES, WELLINGTON LONDON.
A vkry interesting statement has been prepared by the Government Statistician showing the difference in prices of certain commodities in Wellington and London for the months of May, June and July of last year. The prices fluctuate a little over the three months, but taking, July the figures are as follow for the articles named Flour (251 b bag)—Wellington, 4s n-%d ; London, 5s Bread (2lb) —Wellington, 5d ; London, Mutton (leg) —Wellington, sj£d ; London, English is 2d, New Zealand irozen Mutton (loin)— Wellington, 5%d ; London, English is 3d ; New Zealand lod. Beef (prime ribs) — Wellington, 6 ; London, English is 4d, chilled is 2d. Rump steak —Wellington, lod ; London, English is Bd, chilled is 3d. Butter —Wellington, is (the highest quotation of the three months) ; London, Danish is yd. New Zealand is 6d, Australian is 3d. Cheese Wellington, io)^d; London, English is 2d, Canadian is id, New Zealand is id. Sugar—Wellington, 3d per lb. ; London, per lb. These figures show that the actual goods themselves, quality for quality, are cheaper here than at Home. Cheaper-priced qualities are, however, purchasable by the masses at Home, and are more commonly used. In making comparisons of the respective costs of living, a higher condition of living be allowed for in New Zealand ; and cheaper rents and clothes and other necessities tend to make living for a working man cheaper by, it is computed, about 25 per cent, in London than in New Zealand.
