The work of classifying certificated teachers under the Dominion grading scheme, which has been occupying the attention of the Education Department for the past two months has now reached an advanced stage. In addition to the teachers at present in the employment of education boards, provision is being made for the grading of all primary school teachers who at the present time may not be so employed, provided they make formal application before March 31st next to the senior inspector of the education district in which they reside. It is stated by the Ashburton Guardian that the demand for farm labourers is keen in the Ashburtou County, particularly for strong youths and men over military age. Several farmers, when enquiring for men at the local labour bureau, intimated that they would refuse to employ men of military age who were fit to go into camp. One Ashburton farmer, when looking for a man, was most emphatic on this point; he stated that he had sent some of his own sons away, and he was not going to fill their places on tUe farm with men who should also go. Master W. F. Seeker, of Messrs Barraud and Abraham’s staff. Palmerston North, was made the subject of a presentation of a wristlet watch by the firm on Wednesday in recognition of his bravery in rescuing a lady from drowning in the Manawatu river on Sunday last. The presentation was made by Mr L. A. Abraham, managing director, in the presence ot the staff, the speaker referring to Master Seeker’s fine deed in terms of the highest praise, saying he was made of the same stuff as the New Zealanders who were fighting so well for their country. In the course of an address given at Patumahoe on Monday night (reports the New Zealand Heraldj, the Prime Minister sounded a warning note. New Zealand could not expect to get as much for its produce after the war as it was getting now, he said, and it would have to provide employment for large numbers of returned men. The people sometimes forgot the enormous war expenditure of the country. The war was costing New Zealand per month, and there was a prospect of a still further increase. He believed, however, that the country would see the war through to the end. There was one thing certain : No country would recover from the effects of the war as New Zealand would, for the energy of her people and the quality of her products would stand by her. Mr Massey said he believed the demand for New Zealand produce would continue, and the advertisement it was at present receiving would be of invaluable service in normal times.
