THE EGG MARKET.

A scarcely’ ot eggs is reported. The wholesale price in Wellington has advanced to 2s per dozen. Commenting on the egg market, “Chantecler,” under the heading of Poulty Notes appearing in last Saturday’s Dominion, says: “The egg market appears to have recovered itself during the week, and prices are much firmer. There is no reason to think that the factors assigned for the slump are due to the import of eggs so much as to the congenial season experienced. During February the supply was very heavy and stocks quickly accumulated as the result of the high price to which eggs rose. The eggs had to be sold, and the only way to quit them was through cheapening the price. It should be the policy ot producers to encourage consumption. Eggs up to is lod a dozen wholesale in February -is absurd, and shows neither sense nor reason. It could only bring about the slump that occurred. Now that the supply is dropping and hens are entering the winter months, there is some justification tor the increased price. If producers unfairly raise the price of their products the public become resentful, and merchants, to hold the trade, will seek outside markets. Many of the bakers who were made to believe that there would be a big shortage of eggs in New Zealand owing to dear feed, booked their orders for millions of eggs for use this winter, and they are in the position of having been landed with imported eggs, while local country eggs have gone a begging; ”
