SELLING CONFECTIONS ON SUNDAY.
Persons trading on Sunday commit an offence which upon conviction carries a substantial fine. At the Wellington S.M. court yesterday, George Burtenshaw was convicted and fined 20s, costs 73, in default seven days’ imprisonment; his wife, Elizabeth Burtenshaw, being convicted and discharged.’ Elizabeth Jensen, on a similar charge, was fined ss, costs 7s. One of the accused put forth an ingenious plea by stating that it was peppermint lozenges that were purchased, and as a chemist was permitted to sell them on Sunday, shopkeepers should be allowed the same privilege. The court did not agree with counsel’s argument.
