MANAWATU COUNTY AND RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.
LONG STANDING DISPUTE;
SETTLED
The following letter has been received by Mr W. H. Field, M.P., from the Hon. W. H. Herrles, Minister for Railways, under date March 14th : —v “With reference to the deputation which waited on me on Bth ultimo respecting the dedication of a strip of railway reserve alopg the Rangiotu-Foxton road for road purposes, I have the honour to inform you that arrangements are being made for the land in question to be handed over to the County Council ior road purposes without any stipulation.”
The above letter constitutes the final settlement of a long-standing dispute between the Railway Department and the Manawatu County Council. After voluminous correspondence between the County Council, Mr W. H. Field, and the Department, Sir James Wilson, County chairman, Mr Drew, Countj r clerk, and Mr Field waited on the Minister about a fortnight ago and discussed the subject in all its bearings. The Department has now conceded the Council’s claims. The Council hold that the Railway Department took part of the main road at Rangiotu and in order to make room for the road the Department took a strip of land which they offered to the Council if that body would take and give over to the Department another strip of land in the vicinity which the railways required. The Council objected and hence the dispute which is now happily settled.
