CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor)

Sir.—l was very disappointed to read in your last issue a report of the Patriotic Society’s meeting in which particulars of amounts collected in the patriotic boxes for various streets were set out. Now, sir, when this scheme of raising funds was first initiated it was given out that the utmost secrecy was to be observed and only the total amount collected each time published. I would ask those responsible sir, if strict secrecy has been observed by all collectors, as it is rumoured that such is not the case and does the society think "that it has gained anything by publishing the amount collected in each division? Where does the secrecy come in, sir ? I have heard this matter discussed and the opinions expressed are that the society has, unwittingly, done the scheme a great deal of harm. Why should a way be left open for a comparison of the amounts collected in the streets where wealthy people live and those where poorer people dwell ? Those who have given their mite have made a much greater sacrifice than those who have filled their boxes. But, sir, people don’t look at it in this light and a mistake has been made which will prejudice further givihg by people in poorer circumstances, —Yours in anticipation, Worker.
