PALMERSTON’S ONE-EYED OPPOSITION.
The Palmerston Chamber of Commerce is very thorough when it takes up anything. There is no half-way doings in its methods of gaining its ends. Hence our big neighbour which legitimately snares our trade and attracts our townspeople to itself —through its Chamber ot Commerce has, in the past, twisted the Government to its views in obtaining what it wants. Mark its tenacity in the policy of opposition to the linkingup of the Main Trunk Eine. It is not beating the big drum this time but is quietly spreading specious arguments among local authorities in the Wairarapa, East Coast and Hawke’s Bay, pointing out the fallacious side-tracking illusion and the neglect of railway communication in those parts. Of course, the Chamber’s communications are mere moonshine born of parochial selfishness and savour of the dog in the manger, but they stir up opposition to the linkingup of the Main Trunk Eine —a work of vital national importance. What are the advocates ol the railway connection doing to counteract the Chamber’s communications ? We have not heard anything. Palmerston’s fear of being side-tracked is absurd. Palmerston will continue to progress and remain the chief centre of the district in spite of tfie linking-up of the Main Trunk Eine and the Chamber’s opposition is one-eyed parochialism.
