LEVIN-GREATFORD RAILWAY.
COUNSEL’S FEES, The question of counsel’s fee in connection with the commission appointed to enquire into the Levin-Greatfprd railway and other matters of interest to this district was discussed at the meeting of the Levin Borough Council on Monday evening, says the Chronicle. At the last meeting of the Horowhenua County Council that body had agreed to contribute pro rata, but limited its contribution to Cr. Davies moved that the amount to be paid by the borough council be limited to They must keep control of their liability, as it was the ratepayers’ money they were spending. Councillor France seconded the motion. It was not businesslike to take up an unlimited liability. Further discussion took place, and then it was resolved to contribute to the legal expenses in connection with the forthcoming Royal Commission touching the proposed Leviu-GreatforJ railway on the terms of the recommendation made in that behalf at the first meeting of delegates mentioned in Mr Drew’s (Manawatu County Clerk) letter of 22nd ultimo—provided that the other local bodies there represented do likewise. In the event of other arrangements having to be made in order to meet the necessary legal expenses, this council limits its contribution thereto to The motion, which was moved by Councillor Davies and seconded by Councillor France, was carried.
