THE WAR.
Details of the second phase of the great German offensive at Verdun show that despite a most prodigal sacrifice of life, the enemy failed to break the French resistance. In Paris there is no anxiety regarding the outcome ot the battle ;in Britain the outlook is considered to 'be hopeful—"the 'Allies have never been surer ot victory.” The fight for the village of Douaumont still continues with varying success. Before Belfort, on the Border of Alsace, the Germans are now said to be displaying intense activity. In Flanders the British report a minor success.
It is reported that the Turks are tiring ot the war and their German taskmasters. Anti-war demonstrations have been held in Constantinople, and troops sent to disperse the demonstrators joined them instead. Attempts have been made on the lives of both Enver Pasha and Talaat Bey. It is reported that twenty German Dreadnoughts have quitted Kiel, and that naval activity is promised at an early date.
