On St. Patrick’s night a grand Irish national concert will take place in the Coronation Town Hall, under the auspices of St. Mary’s Church management. Included among the talented artists who will contribute to the programme will be Mrs O’Hara, the well-known Wanganui vocalist and pianist. Full particulars will appear later. Talking of shirkers, at the Horowhenua County Council meeting recently, Cr Kebbell stated that he knew of a woman who was mother of three sons, all single, and of the right stamp for soldiers, yet, despite the mother’s earnest desire, all three absolutely refused to enlist. “And these men,’’ added Cr Kebbell, “come from a fighting strain on both sides of parentage.” The death occurred at New Plymouth on Friday last of the Rev J. H. Lewis. Mr Lewis, who had recently been in bad health, retired from the active ministry of the Presbyterian Church six years ago. He came to the Dominion about thirty years ago, and occupied, charges at Nelson, Dunedin, Gore, Woodvilleand Paeroa. Since residing in New Plymouth, Mr Lewis has acted as relieving minister on many occasions when his health permitted. He left a widow, two sons, and three daughters. The late rev. gentleman supplied the Foxton pulpit for a time after the Rev Mr Aitken removed to Methven.
