LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Id conversation with us yesterday, the secretary of the Education Board said there was a dearth of candidates offering as pupil teachers in the southern end of the district. The Board was doing its utmost to fill vacancies. An admission was recently made by a prominent German banker to a neutral iriend : “Our commerce and industry are existing solely on credit. The conclusion of hostilites means bankruptcy for us as bankers.”

The ventilation in two oi the class-rooms at the local State school is very unsatisfactory during the hot weather, and the committee suggests erecting doors in the walls. The Board's foreman is to inspect and report on the proposal. The local manager of Messrs Fuller’s Pictures informs us that a rumour has been recently circulated to the effect that Messrs Fuller’s were retiring shortly from the picture business in Foxtou. He states that there is absolutely no foundation in fact for such a rumour and gives it an unqualified denial.

Conditional upon complying with certain requirements of the Board, Miss Florence M. Desmond has been appointed a pupil teacher on the staff of the local State school and will take up her duties on Monday next. Miss M. Sewell, of Wanganui, who recently matriculated, has also been appointed to the staff by the Board and will take up her duties next week. “An author may feel proud and plume himself when he has succeeded in writing a successful book, in 100,000 or 125,000 words, but when he sees the pith and marrow of it including the characters, atmosphere and story —visualised in moving pictures, in which only 200 or 300 words are used for sub-titles, he cannot but feel the great superiority of moving pictures over the written word.” The above paragraph refers to the picturisatiou of Rex Beach’s famous book “ The Spoilers,” to be shown at the Town Hall next Monday and Tuesday.

Complaints have been made to the local S.M. and rector of the High School in respect to the conduct of pupils travelling to and from school on the Palmerston* Foxton line. Complaints of this nature are general throughout the Dominion, wherever children are conveyed to school. It is difficult to restrain lads bubbling over with vitality on these journeys, but they should remember that any passenger has the right to lodge a complaint which may be taken before the Magistrate, and a conviction for misconduct also carries with it dismissal Irom school. We should be sorry to see any local parents punished, and the school career of any ot the pupils cut short, but this will result if the conduct does not improve.
