THE RAILWAY COMMISSION.
The estimate made at the Marton conference of the cost of employing counsel, to lay the evidence before the Commission to enquire into the Leviu-Greatford railway and the Foxton wharf, etc,, varied from ,£IOO to £2OO, with the probabilities in favour of the latter amount. The amount to Ire paid by the local bodies interested. The matter was discussed by the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, Cr Kebbell considered the DevinGreatford line should be pushed on by all means. It was of national importance. Cr Cately said that he was not prepared to give a blank cheque towards counsel’s fees. The Council’s contribution should be limited. The chairman said that he would be unable to attend the Commission and suggested that Cr Retter be the Council’s representative. The County was going to benefit by the shortening of the line, and he did not think that any riding should wish to be left out. Cr Stephenson said that he was not going to commit his riding to any expenditure. Cr Cately reminded Councillors that they had not money to throw away. The Council was heavily in debt. It was decided that the Council help to pay, pro rata, counsel ; the Council’s liability, however, to be limited to .£3O. The chairman and Cr Retter will be the Council’s delegates.
