WAR AND MARRIAGE.

ILLEGITIMACY HAS NOT INCREASED. The effect of the war upon (i) the number of marriages in New Zealand, and (2) the number of illegitimate births has been discussed in many quarters of late. The actual position is shown by some figures prepared by the Registrar-General's Department at the direction of the Minister for Internal Affairs :

The figures indicate that the war has produced an appreciable increase in the number of marriages, but has not added to the normal number of illegitimate births. The substantial increase the number of marriages must be attributed in part to the desire of certain men to appear as “married” in the National Register, though it is a fact that many members of the expeditionary forces have hastened their marriages before leaving the Dominion.
