THE AWAHOU DRAIN.

The Awahou drain, from Johnston St. to the river outlet, gives forth a very malodorous smell during the dry weather. This old channel will always be a menace to the health of those who reside near it. Despite the efforts of the Council, house water and other drainage finds its way into it, and for lack of flushing, it naturally becomes a prolific breeding ground during the hot weather for myriads of microbes. To cover it with concrete channelling from the vicinity mentioned to the outlet would be a costly undertaking, which could not be met out of ordinary revenue. The Council is aware of the nuisance, and has done all in its power to prohibit residents using it as a sewer, but it is still a nuisance, and will continue to be a menace to the health of the community until it is covered. We suggest that a loan should be raised to deal with the matter for all time. We know a howl will be set up about increasing the rates, but we do not think any one would complain at a slight increase for this purpose. As the matter stands the drain is a menace to the health of the whole community during the summer months.
