THE KING AND CLUTHA MACKENZIE.
HIS MAJESTY'S SYMPATHY. MESSAGE TO A SELFSACRIFICING MOTHER. London, Feb. 10. The King and Queen gave an audience to Clutha Mackenzie, who was accompanied by his father (Sir Thomas Mackenzie). The King sympathised with Clutha’s bad luck, and spoke in warmest appreciation of the New Zealanders’ achievements. Sir Thomas Mackenzie mentioned a letter he had received Irom the Rev Mr Featherstone, of Inglewood, relating that a widow had four sons killed and three wounded, yet went to Wellington to bid God-speed to her eighth son when he was leaving lor the front. The King instructed Sir Thomas Mackenzie to convey his admiration of the widow’s patriotism and self-sacrifice, courageous resignation with which she had borne her heavy loss, and the willingness with which she had given her eighth and last child at the country’s call.
