RAILWAY EXTENSION.

CONFERENCE TO BE HEED AT MARTON ON SATURDAY NEXT. Mr Edward Newman, M.P. for Rangitikei, visited Foxton today and interviewed the Mayor re the proposed conference of local body delegates to discuss the steps to be taken before the Royal Commission on matters concerning the linking up of the Main Trunk line between Marton and Levin and the extension of the Sandon tramway. In conversation with us, Mr Newnau expressed the opinion that Foxton was not a convenient centre to hold the proposed conference, as delegates would have to be present from as far north as New Plymouth and beyond Taihape. He suggested that Marton or Taihape would be more central, and this opinion was shared by other northern bodies interested. The object of his visit was to point this out to the Mayor. The Conference had not been overlooked at the northern end, and a suitable centre and date was under consideration when Foxton decided upon same. Mr Newman said the vital importance of railway matters to be considered by the Commission could not be underestimated from a national point of view. The Foxton Harbour Board had the support of the districts in connection with the wharf, and could fight its own battle in this connection, but the railway affairs were distinct issues and needed separate handling. He intended to suggest that the conference proposed to be held at Foxton be adjourned to Marton on Saturday next. Subsequently we were informed by the Mayor (Mr Alf. Fraser) that after conferring with Mr Newman on the subject, he was quite willing to fall In with the proposed adjournment of the Conference to Marton at ii a.m. on Saturday, in the Coronation Town Hall, and he had notified local bodies and others by telegram of the change ot date and place of meeting.
