WHEAT SHORTAGE.
MORE IMAGINARY THAN REAL.
A consignment of 24,000 bushels ot Sydney wheat was brought to Auckland by the steamer Riverina on Monday, to the order of a local firm, says the Herald. It is stated that the reason for bringing Australian wheat to the Dominion is that, including duty, it can be lauded more cheaply than Southern wheat can be brought to Auckland. The Riverina’s shipment, it is stated, is being landed at Auck* land at a cost of 2d per bushel less than a Southern consignment there would cost. It is the first shipment of the season brought to Auckland, and whether any more are likely to follow depends entirely upon the New Zealand market price. Auckland merchants state that they are quite satisfied that the shortage of wheat in New Zealand is more imaginary than real.
