ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Dunedin, January 19. Christina Loeffler, an elderly married women, was tending a fire which she had put on outside her dwelling house at Waitahuua Gully, when her dress caught fire, aud she shortly afterwards succumbed to her injuries. Auckland, January 19. Margaret Noonan, aged twentynine, died in the hospital from the effects of drinking chloroform. She bad written a letter indicating her intention to commit suicide. Woouvillk, Jan. 18. A young man named Harold Wood lost his life in the Mauawatu River at Kumeroa this afternoon. He and his younger brother, who were staying with the Jacksons, went in to bathe. The elder brother soon got into difficulties and sank. Greymouth, Jan. 18. A double drowning fatality occurred on the South Beach this afternoon. A number of people were surf bathing. Constable Dillon and Nurse Regan were a considerable distance out, when the nurse got into difficulties. Dillon attempted to rescue her, but both were drowned. Constable Dillon was single, aged 32 years. He has no relatives in New Zealand. Nurse Regan was formerly of Christchurch. Dunedin, Jan. iS, Frank Martiuelli, leader of the orchestra at the Grand Picture Theatre, was drowned in Broad Bay this morning whilst bathing. Christchurch, Jan. 19. Vera, Olive, and Sam Mumlord, aged ten, seven and six years respectively, were drowned in the lake at the Riccarton racecourse this afternoon. They were paddling, and slipped over a shelf into about nine feet of water.
