THE GASWORKS.
MANAGER'S REPORT. The gas manager reported as follows at Monday night’s Council meeting:— ‘ ‘Since last report we have laid five new services and four meters have been fixed; four large cookers have been installed and another is at present being fixed. Three others are on order and when formal arrangements are made with the office will be placed in position at once. Judging from the many enquiries made and the great satisfaction the new cookers are giving I expect that more than half of the shipment received will have been placed with our customers before your Council again ’ meets. • It may be noted in the monthly statements that the sale of gas for cooking purposes has advanced 32 per cent, on corresponding month of last year and there is also over 100 per cent, advance on gas used for power. The coal received during the month was tons.” The Mayor said the position of the gas works was highly satisfactory and he felt sure that at the end of the year a much better positiou would be shown than that of the previous year. Taking everything into consideration he thought the Council’s action in reducing the price of gas a few months ago would be fully justified. Cr Whibley : Why do you look at me ? The Mayor : I was wondering „ whether Cr Whibley was pleased or not that the position was so satisfactory. Cr Whibley : I am very pleased indeed, but I’m glad that the reduction you advocated iu the first place was not put into|operalion|
