The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, January 8, 1916. THE KAISER AND CANCER.
A cable Informs us that the Kaiser is stricken with partial loss of voice, and is suffering, morally and physically, unimaginable pangs in the innermost chamber of the Palace. The Paris newspaper Ee Matin accepts the theory that the Kaiser is suffering from cancer, and recalls that in February, 1912, a French surgeon was called on to remove his larynx, substituting an artificial voice-box with a respiratory tube leading to the trachea. The Kaiser, afraid of losing his speech, preferred a smaller operation. The disease is inexorable in its advance, now undoubtedly giving the choice between death from suffocation and the severe operation of cutting out the larynx. Despite all that medical science and skill can do, the disease from which the Kaiser is suffering is inexorable in its advance.
