The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, December 23, 1915. PEACE AND GOODWILL!

Before another issue of the Heraed reaches our readers, Christmas 1915 will have been numbered with the past. At this time we celebrate the birth of the long promised Messiah, whose appearance was the means of’ reconciling man to his Creator and bringing about peace on earth and goodwill towards men. Peace and goodwill towards men ! What a satire ! The dogs of war let loose and the nations of the earth engaged in the bloodiest and most diabolical struggle ever conceived in or out of hell. The angels weep ! Science and wealth concentrated to invent and bring into use instruments of death and annihilation. Art and all peaceful pursuits crushed and blood-bespattered. The world roiling back into a sea of barbarism, blood and hate. Starvation, misery and deep sorrow overclouding millions of unoffending people. Where does peace and goodwill come in ? Dare we blame the Creator and the Harbinger of Peace ! Surely not ! The blame must be laid upon the ambitious and covetous head of Bloody William, the modern Ahab. Let us hope ere another Christmas dawns that peace in its fulness will be established upon the earth and out of it evolve a higher and truer conception of the Great Message delivered nearly two thousand years ago. In this peaceful land we have not realised the horror of this stupendous struggle. True, many homes are darkened with sorrow at this glad season, and there will be many vacant chairs around the festive (?) board, but our general prosperity in material things was never greater. Let our sympathy go out in practical measure to the bereaved and suffering and the poor within our gates. It is a time for reconciliation. Forget the nasty things and let misunderstandings and all uncbaritableness of the past die with the old year. Stretch forth the hand of good fellowship, and let this be a season of happy reunion. To our readers we gladly convey the old message and our best wishes for health and happiness in the New Year.
