LOCAL STATE SCHOOL.

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION. The local State school prizegiving ceremony took place in the school quadrangle on Thursday afternoon. Mr Hornblow, chair" man of committe, distributed the prizes and apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr Poynton, S.M., who had been asked to officiate in that capacity. The chairman congratulated the school upon the good results obtained throughout the year and made special reference to the excellent proficiency results. Owing to sickness and transfers and a general shortage of teachers, the staff had been handicapped in its work and in view of these facts the results were highly creditable. He was pleased to know that for the first time for many years a boy, Evelyn Smith, had won the distinction of dux of the school with over 90 per cent, of marks in the proficiency examination a record. The runner-up was Rena Barber. He referred to the good work being accomplished by expupiis at the secondary schools and gave some advice to those who were leaving. On behalf of the committee he congratulated the headteacher, staff and scholars upon the work of the year and the excellent tone of the school. He wished them all the compliments of the season and continued progress during the coming year and called for cheers for the staff which were lustily given. Mr Jackson, headteacher, thanked the committee and parents for their hearty co-opera-tion in school matters and cheers were given for them together with those who had donated prizes or in any other way had assisted in the welfare ot the school.

Claris 3 ; St. 11., Vernon Dauiell x, Hirini 2, Cecil Francis 3 ; St. 1., Joseph Huff 1, Phyllis Honour 2, Tim Procter 3 ; Primer IV., Florence Hart 1, W. Harrison 2, Geo. Small 3 ; Primer 111., Kathleen Mitchell 1, Katie Lacey 2, Dolph Cook 3; Primer 11., Avis Haydock 1, Lorraine Saunders 2, Geo. Lockwood 3 ; Primer 1., Geo. Ward 1, Marion Stiles 2, Zena Easton 3 ; best footballer, medal donated by headteacher, Maurice Robinson ; best cricketer, medal donated by Mr Gabites, Cecil Lawton. After the ceremony the children were entertained in the school grounds.
