MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. Present Crs H. H. Hunt (acting- Chair man), W. J. Phillips, B. Gray, W. K. Barber, S. Penny, and M'. Hammond. Cr Sir James Wilson sent an apology tor absence. Correspondence was read as follows: —From Public Works Department asking for particulars of grants required for construction of roads and bridges. From Petone Borough Council forwarding copy of.- resolution in favour of granting soldiers’ pensions as of right, without making deductions for property or other income. From Raglan County Council sending copy of resolution refusing to employ single men eligible for military service. A motion was agreed to urging on the Government that in the payment of soldiers’ pensions the amounts should not be subject to any reduction or variation, and that Parliament be called together to amend the Act. TRAMWAY REPORT. The tramway manager reported the chief items of traffic were as follows: Merchandise tons, minerals 97 % tons, manure 9 0% tons, metal 1120 cubic yards, timber 21,100 feet, wool 156 bales. Fares amounted to £3 7s yd. engineer's report. The engineer reported as follows: Awahou Riding.—The usual road maintenance work has been effected on the various roads in this ridiug, such as carting metal to patch up weak places and filling in washouts on Karikari road. General, —The steam roller was landed in Foxton about the middle of last month, and was put together by Messrs Anderson’s mechanic. A trial run was made along the Foxton-Beach road for a distance of a mile, where good work was done by rolling in stones that had been, knocked out by the grader. I intend rolling the Foxton Beach road from one end to the other as soon as an enginedriver is available for the work.
