THE FIRST RETURNS. A preliminary summary ot the results of the National Register as far as men of military age are concerned was placed before the Government on Tuesday by the Government Statistician (Mr Malcolm Fraser. The figures deal only with men aged from nineteen years to forty-four years, and they show the extent to which the Dominion’s manhood has responded to the appeal made to its patriotism. More than 109,000 men have expressed their willingness to serve with the expeditionary forces if they are required. WITTING TO SERVE. The total number of men who stated on their census cards their willingness to serve with the forces was 109,683, or more than halt of the total number ot men of military age. The number was made up as follows : Single men and widowers without dependents ... 33,127 Single men, with dependents ... ... 16,321 Widowers with dependents 947 Married men with wife only ... ... 9,944 Married men with wife & other dependents ... 50,344 Total 109,683 The men who indicated on their forms that they had already been accepted for service with the forces, but had not yet been called up, numbered 4421. The number ot men who stated their readiness to serve the State in a civil capacity was 43,525. Other classifications were as follow. Volunteered for Expeditionary Forces, but rejected ... ... 9042 British subjects, incapacitated for military service ... ... 3963 Foreign subjects ... 3206 Returned troopers ... 288 THE UNWITTING MEN. The number of men of military age who stated that they were hot willing either to join the forces or to serve the State in a civil capacity was 34,386. This brought the grand total up to 209,513 men of military age accounted for. The Government Statistician states that another 7000 men have not yet been classified owing to mistakes or omissions in their forms.
