"ME MATES IS CALLING ME.”
Acrost the seas me cobber’s call comes clear, Kinder bewildered ’cause I ain’t to ’and, “Where’s Bill ? Bhme, where’s Bill; why ain’t he ’ere Doin’ his bit to free the bloomin’ land ?” And once (I got the letter on me still), ’Twas ‘‘Boys, the swines has got me; tell ole Bill.” O, can’t yer see what they must think of it, These mates of ours, that crawl, and sweat and die, Fightin’ the bloody trenches bit by bit So hell on earth might pass their loved ones by ? Swearin’ and cussin’ like as not may be, But plaster saints ’longside o’ you and me. * * * * From out the gatherin’ mist of blood and tears. Nearer and clearer comes the pleadin' cry: How shall you lace the passing of the years If Hell prevail and Peace and Mercy die ? For Christ, His sake — yet only He can know. Me mates is callin’ me —I got to go.
