THE GAS WORKS.

OCTOBER WORKING

MANAGER’S REPORT

The gas works manager reported at last night’s Council meeting as follows : “I have to report good trade during the month of October. The sales of gas through consumers meters show a steady increase and we gained ten per cent, on the corresponding month of last. year. The short length of street main in Cook Street has been put down, seven new services have been laid, two gas cookers fixed and fittings installed into five dwellings. Five other cookers ought to be placed in position during the present month, but owing to the very mysterious delay in landing these from Home our customers are being disappointed, and our trade is now crippled for the present season. The new retorts are now in use and when the heats are fully matured the old bench will be let out ot use. In about two weeks from date we can dismantle this and have it ready for repairs and renewals. This work must be arranged for at once as our increasing consumption will not allow of any delay.” The report was adopted, and it was decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Henderson, that Mr A. Baker, retort setter, of Palmerston N,, be asked to meet the Gas Works Committee re fixing new retorts in old setting, and that the Committee be given power to let contract for same.
