SHILLING CHRISTMAS GIFT FUND.
The Amateur Sports Clubs of New Zealand have initiated an effort to send a Christmas Gift to all the troops at Gallipoli and Samoa. It is intended to make arrangements with reputable firms at Home to despatch to the seat of war at the Dardanelles, half a pound of chocolate or barley sugar and enough tobacco aud papers to make 120 cigarettes tor distribution among the troops at Christmas time. The sweets aud tobacco will be packed in hermetically sealed tins embossed with suitable greetings. The cost of the two packages delivered at the front will be approximately nd and it is proposed to raise the funds by a universal one shilling subscription. The various sports bodies throughout the Dominion are being asked to promote the movement in their respective centres and it is intended that each locality should work with perfect freedom and adopt what methods they consider most advisable Ip raise the necessary funds. The movement is one which must commend Itself and a gift of the nature proposed from the “sports” of New Zealand is sure to be welcomed by the recipients, and will afford us an opportunity of expressing our appreciation of the, efforts aud sacrifices which they are making on our behalf. Mr A. J. Kellow has been asked to convene a meeting and arrange a scheme of collection. This meeting will be held on Thursday evening at S, at the office of the Foxton Racing Club, and all members of the Tennis, Bowling, Croquet, Rowing, Rifle and Racing Clubs are particularly requested to be present.
