BOWLING.

OPENING OF LOCAL GREEN,

The official opening of the local green and croquet lawns took place yesterday afternoon. The weather conditions were all that could be desired, and the grounds were in excellent order, and reflected credit on the club’s caretaker, Mr H. Webb, who had spared no effort in order to get the playing areas in the best possible condition. Several members of the Club have assisted in this work during the last week or two, and all yesterday morning half-a-dozeu enthusiastic members were working on the ground. Yesterday afternoon visiting bowlers were present from Otaki and Levin, and there was a good muster of local members. Both croquet lawns were fully occupied. There was a fair attendance of the general public, the fair sex being well represented. In the absence of Mr W. Petrie, the Club’s president, the opening ceremony was performed by the senior vice-president, Mr D. Whibley, who has been a member of the Club since its inception. He read the following telegram from Mr Petrie, who is at present absent in the South Island : “Sorry unable to be present at opening. Best wishes for an enjoyable afternoon.” The first jack was thrown by Mrs Petrie, and she also played the first bowl, putting up “a toucher,” which brought forth r. hearty round of applause. Mrs Healey played the first shot on the croquet lawns. Afternoon tea was provided by the Club, and dispensed by lady members. In the games with the visiting rinks, one was won by the local players and one by the visitors. Prior to leaving in the evening, Mr Witchell, who was one of the founders of the Foxton Club, and who, upon leaving Foxton, was elected a life member, on behalf of the visitors, expressed thanks for the enjoyable afternoon, and extended a hearty invitation to members to visit the Otaki green.
