ROYAL LIFE SAVING SOCIETY.

PROPOSED VISIT TO FOXTON.

The Mayor is in receipt of the following letter from Mr W. C. Collier, lion, secretary of the Wellington Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society : “I beg to approach you regarding the question of a team from this centre demonstrating in the working of the life saving reel on the Foxton beach on Sunday afternoon, the 24th inst. A team is now in training to proceed to Levin on Labour Day, the 25th instant, to demonstrate at the baths there, aud we think it might he practicable to fulfil our longcherished desire, to demonstrate to the residents of Foxton the methods of saving life that will tend to prevent tragedies such as occurred on your beach a few years ago. It is unfortunate that this demonstration must be given on a Sunday, for there are many who object who might otherwise become interested ; but onr men give up their time and pay their own fares on these trips, and being working men, cannot afford to lose wages for demonstrations on week days. The demonstration would include the laud drills of the Society for individual rescue work, resuscitation of the apparently drowned by the most up-to-date methods, and rescue work in teams with the life-saving reel, the whole occupying about bouts. The object of the visit will be to create sufficient interest among your citizens to induce them to form a life-saving club. In the event of our proposal being favourably received, do yon think it possible that a vacant house, or a fair sized tent, could be placed at the disposal of the party on the Saturday and Sunday nights ? I do not wisii the team put to hotel expenses if I can avoid it. And could our conveyance to Levin be arranged—the expense to be borne by my Society, of course ? I have already received word from Leviu that they will do everything in their power to make our visit successful, and will await your reply, and Feilding’s in anticipation of an Intimation of your approval and offer of sympathetic assistance.”

The Mayor replied accepting the offer, and is taking such other steps to make the visit successful from every point of view.
